God Is In The Detail

13.10.2009 02:56

OK, so maybe they're a little bit sweaty, but have any of you seen more amazingly sensitive footage of this band than this?

http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/2043-grizzly-bear/1

How good is the transistor radio sound effect or those stained glass windows. Simply amazing. We can't wait until this band arrive later in the year. Let's hope the acoustics get somewhere close to this holy site's ones.

Another fav album from this decade

02.10.2009 02:54

The For Carnation: Self Titled (2000)

When this album was released it was one of the strangest sounding things I'd ever heard. It still is. Track 4, Snoother, comprised of sub sonic dub bass rumbles and half singing, half breathing from Brian McMahon. The man that practically invented the genre post rock with Slint. Find this self titled record if you've never heard it and put it on just as the sun is breaking at about 4am. It is about as close as someone has come to Twin Peaks in song. I've searched long and hard for music as paranoid and claustrophobic as this for a long time. No one has done it yet.

The Albums That Stuck

01.10.2009 02:26

I've been thinking about the past  9 years or so in music. Thinking about the albums decline, the media's involvement with hype bands and the digital revolution and it's going to be fixed for people to make experience music in an entirety. So over the next few weeks I'll be writing about some of albums that I think have stuck around as the next somebody became something before disappearing into nowhere again.

Godspeed You Black Emperor: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenna's To Heaven (2000)
Released in 2000 this record was for me and still is the best record of it's particular genre. It encapsulated everything that was post rock, epic, doomey, droney, loud, slow, offense and long long long. I remember at the time, they were touted as the next Nirvana. The saviors of music. I wish they had been and then all popular music had sounded like this instead of the Killers. I love Godspeed You Black Emperor and daydream that one day they will do shows again and come to Australia.

just to let you all know we have set up our comments section for the blog now, sorry for the delay. this of course means you can let us know if you like what we're saying and showing you. we'd love to hear you thoughts on music and beyond. get into it.

while we have you, we were wondering, what do you speak n spell readers out there think about this. if you've had a library book for 5 years or more because you forgot to take it back, is it still stealing? sorry, having existential crisis about our souls etc....

oh also, how awesome is it that we have the new tracks from fionn regan. that's kind of rhetorical actually, no need to speak unless you want to...!

Sleeping States, Castratii and then some...

24.09.2009 04:46

Sure, it's taken me two weeks to post something here. But what can I say, I'm a man who likes to choose his words carefully. With that in mind, this is what I've come up with...

I love Sleeping States. His new album "In The Gardens Of The North" is a godsend.

I also love our latest release by a Sydney based trio called Castratii. I’m allowed to say that because I mean it. This video/song also has me falling into a trance - Hell's teeth, it's some powerful pop-juju...

The Dark Cyrstal

22.09.2009 23:39

I had this thought while driving home yesterday. The music world in 2009 can be summarized by the Dark Crystal. Maybe I've been spending too much time in my car, or not sleeping enough? Maybe I'm crazy? Anyway, I actually think its pretty simple. One side the Skeksis (industry) and the other the Mystics (artists). Two very different races that used to be one, kind of like music in the 50's. Split down the middle when the Crystal cracked. I kind of think as the crystal cracking was the birth of file sharing. I guess we're all just waiting for a gelfling to come along and repair the Crystal and put it all back together again.

Labels want to invest and artists need investing in.

In other news, we just released the debut ep from a new Sydney based project called Castratii. Its pretty close to home for some of us... Hope you like it

skullsquadron

16.09.2009 02:14

Skullsquadron are one of my favourite Sydney bands ever. So I'm pretty chuffed to be releasing their debut 3 track ep in a few weeks. Check out this cover art too. It's killer! Skullsquadron rule.
